A Guide to Antibiotic Assays

Antibiotic assays should be sent to microbiology on a microbiology request form. Blood samples should be in a red plain top (clotted) bottle. Request cards must state the dosing regimen, the date and time of the last dose, and the time of the blood sample(s), with relevant clinical information.

If there is insufficient information on the request card to interpret the result, then the result will simply be reported on NOTIS without any interpretation. Using an assay sticker can help, find out where there is one on your ward here. General guidance on completing antibiotic assay request cards are available here.

Aminoglycosides

Glycopeptides

Antifungals

Assays for monitoring aciclovir, co-trimoxazole and streptomycin are not always necessary but can be arranged. Discuss the need for these and the practicalities with microbiology.
